No, not huge, just very busy ... Current manning levels are around 50K, but we are also responsible for port security, maritime safety, spill response, aids to navigation, Search and Rescue, Ice Breaking, aids to navigation, Fisheries patrols, enforcement of laws and treaties, Drug Interdiction, (we intercept more drugs each year than all other US law enforcement combined,) and OH yea, we also have to be prepared militarily. since we are often called upon to provide littoral support and escort duties in wartime. (USCG units were some of the first to see duty in the Persian Gulf as our ships are uniquely qualified and suited to operate in those waters. The USCG is still providing security and escort duties in the gulf).
Our CG was formed when Congress combined the Revenue Marine, (the oldest continuously operating maritime service in the USA,) Life Boat Service, and Lighthouse Service.

Compared to our coast guard Kevin the US coast guard is huge. You guys look more like the navy than the coast guard!
