12 stocks making investors a fortune!

It’s a great stock market this year. Yeah, yeah, you know that. But what are the stocks that are really making investors rich.

There are 12 stocks in the Standard & Poor’s 500, including airline Southwest Airlines (LUV), video game company Electronic Arts (EA) and single-cup coffee company Keurig Green Mountain (GMCR) that have jumped 60% or more this year, according to a USA TODAY review of data from S&P Capital IQ. Several jumped much more than 60%.

Airlines certainly scored big. Going into the year, their economics were already much improved with higher aircraft utilization rates. But then the airlines got a second gift — in the form of plummeting oil prices. S&P Capital even says airlines will be the biggest winners from falling oil prices, a trend that likely to continue into next year.

And these factors caused the interesting situation of where it’s not some hot tech stock that was the best stocks of the year, but instead, an airline. Southwest Airlines. The company has topped earnings expectations in each of every of the past five quarters. And investors that foresaw this perfect environment, scored big time. Shares of Southwest are up 116% this year to close at $40.62.


But don’t think that tech was completely left behind. The second best stock of the year — and the best tech stock in the S&P 500 — was Electronic Arts. The company first saw success with strong sales of its first-person shooter game, “Titanfall” for the Xbox One. But it’s also been figuring out how to port many of its successful franchises, like FIFA soccer to today’s advanced smartphones. Shares of Electronic Arts are up 106% this year to close at $47.24.

Don’t get us wrong. There’s nothing to sneeze at with a 11.5% gain this year with the S&P 500. But you can’t help but look — and see where the biggest gains where.

Southwest does not surprise me, they have always been a very solid and well run company. Green Mountain Coffee Roasters is a local company and definitely hit the jackpot with the Kurig System. Wish I had bought their stock when they went public. The two that are a little bit of a surprise to me are Delta and Royal Caribbean. Delta was sucking bilge water not that long ago, and RC has had it's fair share of less than favorable publicity.
